Propane Shortage Alert

For NORTH CAROLINA as of January 20, 2025

Important Winter Safety Information for North Carolina Residents:
As of January 20, 2025, a critical propane shortage is affecting North Carolina and the entire country. Demand is high, supply is low, and propane is getting harder to find. Propane companies are running out of stock.

WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT

  • The shortage may last for weeks, until temperatures rise and companies catch up.
  • Propane deliveries may be delayed or unavailable.
  • Refill stations may shut down temporarily.

Every step you take to stay warm and safe helps. You are not alone. Look out for each other.

PROPANE MANAGEMENT TIPS

Conserve Propane

  • Lower your thermostat to conserve fuel.
  • Layer up with warm clothing and blankets.
  • Seal drafts around doors and windows to keep heat in.
  • Use alternative heating sources wisely (see below).

Propane Safety

  • Check your supply regularly; don’t wait until you run out.
  • Never use stoves, ovens, or outdoor heaters indoors – they can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Ensure proper ventilation if using propane indoors.
  • Test smoke & carbon monoxide detectors to stay safe.
  • Have an emergency plan if you run out of propane.

Carbon Monoxide Danger

  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly.
  • Symptoms of CO poisoning: Headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion.
  • If you suspect CO poisoning: Get fresh air immediately and call for help.
  • Install a CO detector near your sleeping area.

Dangerous Heating Sources to Avoid

  • Ovens & Stovetops: can cause CO poisoning.
  • Outdoor Heaters, BBQ Grills, or Generators Indoors: Deadly CO gas risk.
  • Unvented Gas Heaters: Require proper ventilation to avoid CO buildup.

Alternative Heating Sources

  • Thermal Mass Heating
    • Use passive solar heating by opening curtains on sunny days. Place heat-retaining materials (like bricks or water jugs) near sunlight to absorb and release heat.
  • Body Heat & Insulation
    • Layer warm clothing and use extra blankets. Close off unused rooms to concentrate warmth. Place towels or blankets under doors to prevent drafts. Hang curtains or blankets over windows not receiving sunlight.
  • Electric Space Heaters
    • Use only UL-listed heaters with an automatic shut-off. Keep at least 3 feet away from flammable materials. Never leave unattended or plugged in overnight.
  • Wood Stoves & Fireplaces
    • Ensure proper ventilation to prevent CO buildup. Use dry, seasoned wood for clean burning. Keep flammable items away and use a screen or glass door.
  • Kerosene Heaters (Use with caution)
    • Only use in well-ventilated areas. Use 1-K grade kerosene to prevent toxic fumes. Turn off before sleeping or leaving the room.
