Cold Weather Safety Guide for Volunteers
Do This:
✅ Layer Up – Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulated mid-layers, and windproof outerwear. Wool clothing, especially Wool socks are best!
✅ Keep Moving – Light activity helps maintain body heat but avoid overexertion.
✅ Stay Dry – Wet clothing increases heat loss; change damp layers immediately.
✅ Use Hand & Foot Warmers – Keep extremities warm with disposable or rechargeable warmers. Hot Pockets are wonderful.
✅ Cover Head, Hands, and Neck – Major heat loss areas; use hats, gloves, scarves and wrap the lower back.
✅ Take Warm Breaks – Rotate inside heated shelters or vehicles regularly.
✅ Drink Warm Fluids – Hot tea, soup, or water help maintain core temperature.
✅ Eat High-Calorie Snacks – Energy-dense foods like nuts, protein bars, and chocolate keep the body fueled.
Alert If:
⚠️ Shivering Becomes Intense or Slows to a Stop – A sign of hypothermia setting in.
⚠️ Fingers or Toes Feel Numb/Painful or Itchy – Possible frostbite, seek warmth immediately.
⚠️ Dizziness, Fatigue, or Confusion – Could indicate early hypothermia. Work with a Buddy to check in via conversation to check on each other.
⚠️ Skin Turns Pale or Waxy – Frostbite risk, warm affected areas gradually.
⚠️ Shortness of Breath or Chest Pain – Cold can stress the heart, notify team leads. DEHYDRATION is common, hydrate and utilize electrolyte drinks.
Stop Working When:
❌ Shivering Stops Without Warming Up – Severe hypothermia risk.
❌ You Can’t Feel Hands or Feet – Loss of sensation can lead to frostbite.
❌ You Feel Disoriented or Drowsy – Cold exposure is becoming dangerous.
❌ Clothing is Wet & No Dry Options – Immediate risk of rapid heat loss.
❌ Cold-Related Symptoms Persist Despite Warming – Seek medical assistance.
Stay Safe and Look Out for Each Other!
